Technology In Room 27

At Tauranga Intermediate School there are amazing oportunities and things to get involved in and one of them is TECHNOLOGY. There are many types of tech at T.I.S like Art, Music, Hard materials, Cooking etc.. This term, Room 27 are doing Music and Digital Creations. Our class is split up into two groups and then each group gets 5 lessons in each tech. We attend our tech every week on Wednesday, Block 2. In Digital Creations we are learning how to use Comic Life 2 to create an imaginary super hero comic book cover. In music we are learning to play 'Hey soul sister' and 'Yellow' on the ukulele and record it on garage band to add effects. Mrs Story says that her favourite part of teaching music is working with lots of talented children. Whaea Kim says that her favourite part of teaching digital creations is working on computers all day every day!

Hockey - Gemma talking to class

On the 23rd of May Mrs Flynn's daughter, Gemma came into our class to talk about nutrition, Fitness and her hockey career. Gemma is in the New Zealand black sticks hockey team, and is an elite athlete. Before she came to talk to us, we played a game of in door soccer in the gym. We asked her what was the game that stood out she responded with the final at the Commonwealth games in Deli against Australia. They lost the match in a penalty shoot out but she was pleased with the silver medal.

These are some of our questions we are going to ask Gemma to answer. Add more to the comments if you want to.

Questions:

* What is it like being in front of thousands of people while you play hockey?

* Where was your first game playing for the Black sticks?

* Why did you choose to play hockey over the other sports you played?

Crazy Science Week

Last week was Science week. Room 27 went to the science lab to have fun by trying practical science experiments. We really enjoyed not having to write any thing and just doing the activities.
Sosaia learnt that if you don't close the lid on the jar of rice when shaking it, it goes everywhere!
But seriously, there were lots of cool experiments like the one that you had a piece of card and on one side was a fish and the other side was a bowl. When you spun it, it looked like the fish was swimming in the bowl!
We learnt that the illusion was caused because the brain can't keep up with the speed so it puts it all together creating the illusion that we saw.

Another experiment that was interesting was when you put one hand into a hot bowl of water and at the same time the other one in a cold bowl of water for 30 seconds. Then you had to take them both out and put them both into the tepid or warm water together. Guess what?  The interesting thing was that the hand that was originally in the cold water felt warmer than the hand that was in the hot! This is also a trick of the brain!
Thanks Mr Marsh and Mrs Jensen for letting us use the science lab for these fun science experiments and we learnt a lot too!
